Catholic Schools Award $1, 000 Tuition Scholarship

Clara L. Simmons, a south side resident, won a $1,000 tuition scholarship from the Archdiocese of Chicago through a raffle held during An Expo for Today=s Black Woman. Simmons plans to use the award at St. Joseph Elementary, 1065 N. Orleans St., on behalf of her nephew, Shannon Malcolm.

AThis tuition scholarship is truly a blessing,@ Simmons said. AI was pleased with the education that Shannon was receiving in a Catholic school and we are looking forward to him returning in August.@

The Archdiocese of Chicago participated in the Expo to inform families about the programs and services offered by Catholic schools. Throughout the three-day event, Catholic school principals, teachers, parents and students staffed the booth and answered questions about the school system. Families of many faiths choose to send their children to Catholic Schools.

AAs the nation=s largest non-public school system, we develop the minds and spirits of nearly 130,000 students of all races, faiths and backgrounds,@ Dr. Elaine Schuster, superintendent of the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic schools, said. AWe celebrate diversity in our schools B and we see a lot of success stories.@

Some of these success stories were featured at the Archdiocese of Chicago=s booth. The booth displayed testimonials of well-known men and women who are graduates of Catholic schools and who feel that the education they received was an integral part of their success. These graduates include Isaiah Thomas, NBA legend and owner of the Continental Basketball League; Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, renowned photographer and wife of the late Arthur Ashe; Donzell and Alisa Starks, owners of Meridan Entertainment Group and Inner City Entertainment; and Mellody Hobson, senior vice president of Ariel Capital Management Group.

The Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago B the largest non-public school system in the nation B play a critical rile in the life of the community by developing the minds and spirits of students of many races, faiths and backgrounds in 312 elementary and secondary schools in Cook and Lake counties. There are more than 6,000 teachers in the Catholic school system who instill values, teach discipline and achieve strong, consistent academic results in the Archdiocese of Chicago=s 267 elementary and 45 secondary schools.
