Lawrence Blackful Jr Chicago Standard Newspapers Originally posted 5/26/2002 With over 30 years experience and service to the SouthEast Cook County region, community service leaders are still seeking funding for many of the services they provide. On shoestring budgets and with the help of parishioners, many of these agencies have provided outstanding service to their community. The SouthEast Cook County Consortium on Homelessness is comprised of community service organizations and businesses that feel that the South East corner of Cook County undeserves the Homeless population. Although there are agencies and organizations that provide vital services in this area, there are a still many poverty pockets whose needs are not being addressed or not being adequately addressed. The SouthEast Cook County Consortium (SECH) seeks to collaborate with another consortium that has been established but has not properly recognized and included many key agencies that serve much of the homeless population. As a result, almost all monies provided to serve the homeless population goes to these agencies. These agencies include PADS, RESPOND NOW, WINGS and others. Previous attempts to collaborate among agencies have been unwelcome or have fallen on deaf ears. The primary reason for this is that the larger more affluent agencies primarily white owned or operated agencies are not willing to share the wealth of funding that is distributed among these ''ELITE AGENCIES''. The homeless population in Chicago Heights and Ford Heights continue to increase daily but the dollars to deal with the issue doesn't. Pastor John Rice Sr. of Bethel Community Facility has established a program to provide free showers and grooming to the homeless population and anyone who may be in need of such services but without the proper funding, a much needed service to the community will be dissolved. In the wake of 9/11 many people in the SouthEast Cook County Region are still feeling the ground shaking effects. Community service organizations such as CEDA, Bethel and Ford Heights Community Service Center and others find their doors are being bombarded with individuals seeking food, clothing and shelter. With the formation of (SECH) the South East Cook County Consortium on Homelessness many people who have not benefited from the millions of dollars distributed, will now be able to receive the much needed services and assistance to help lead them from dependency to self sufficiency.
