Temple of Mercy Association host Black Heritage Banquet

The Temple of Mercy Association will present its Black Heritage 2000

Saturday, 2000 at ‘Chicago Celebrations', 11901 S. Loomis from 7 p.m. until

11 p.m. Dinner will be served at 8 p.m. The theme of the dinner is ‘Knowledge

o f self broke every shackle & chain'.

Guest speaker for the event are Attorney Lew Meyers Jr. for Louis Farrakhan

Renowned Black feminist intellectual Bell Hooks to discuss her new

work

Bell Hooks, renowned writer, critic, educator, and Black feminist intellectual,

discusses her new work, All About Love: New Visions on Wednesday, February

2 at 6 p.m. at the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Center, 400

s. State Street. Please use the Plymouth Court entrance. This event is

cosponsored by the Chicago Public Library and the Seminary Co-op Bookstores.

Avoid Post-holiday blues and support a worthy cause

Avoid the post-holiday blues and support a worthy charity by participating

in fundraisers sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association (CBA) Young Lawyers

Section(YLS). The YLS is sponsoring three fund raisers in the months of

January and February, including the YLS Mardi Gras fundraiser and benefits

for the Law Explorers and Voices for Illinois Children.

Voices for Illinois Children will be held Thursday, January 27, 2000,

at North Beach Club, at Weed and Sheffield Streets, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, and include access to sand

Historian and public affairs commentator to speak on Martin Luther

King Jr. Day

Manny Marable professor of history and political science and director

of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia,

will be keynote speaker for the University of Chicago's ecumenical observance

of Martin Luther King Jr. Day at noon on Monday, Jan. 17, in Rockefeller

Memorial Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn Ave.

In addition to Marable's address, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day program

will include poetry readings, dance, drama and musical performances. Rev.

Alison Boden, Dean of Rockefeller chapel, will present the invocation,

and a student will read passages from King's writing.

Free Genealogy Lecture/Forum

A free Genealogy lecture will be given January 15, 2000 at the Woodson

Regional Library Center, 9525 South Halsted, Chicago 60643. The lecture

meets 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and the topic is ‘Family Reunion.' Speakers

include Almeeta Steemer (What's is in a name?), Velma Gladney Griot Storyteller)

The Appraisal Fair January 22 & 23 rescheduled

Home and Garden Television Network's ‘The Appraisal Fair,' originally

scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, January 22 and 23 in Navy Pier's Crystal

Gardens, has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict.

‘The Appraisal Fair' will resume taping in the Crystal Gardens at Navy

Pier Saturday, and Sunday, February 19 and 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Thomas Cahill at the Chicago Public Library

Best-selling author Thomas Cahill will visit the Chicago Public Library

to discuss and sign his new book, Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The

World Before and After Jesus.

The program will be held on Thursday, January 27 at 6:00 p.m., in the

Lower Level Auditorium of the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S.

State St. this even is cosponsored by Seminary Co-op Bookstores. For more

Offices to close for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

All Secretary of State offices and facilities will be closed for Martin

Luther King Day, Secretary of State Jesse White announced. The only exception

is Ford City Mall. The holiday is observed by all state agencies.

Driver Services facilities outside Cook County and the Chicago West,

Midlothian and Niles facilities in Cook County, which normally are open

Tuesday through Saturday, will be closed Saturday, January 15, and will

reopen Tuesday, Jan. 18. All offices that normally are open Monday through

Friday will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, and will resume business Tuesday,

Jan. 18.

African Americans in Ohio and Civil War maps are subjects of new

web presentation

The American Memory Program of the Library of Congress has just made

available two new presentations of historical materials: ‘The African-American

Experience in Ohio' and ‘Civil War Maps.'

  The collections of materials relating to American-history that

are available from American Memory (www.loc.gov) are drawn from the Library

of Congress– whose collections are unparalleled in their depth and diversity–as

well as from other repositories.
