ASE Storytelling Concert

at Malcolm X College

ASE: The Chicago Association of Black

Storytellers is pleased to announce its second annual Chicago storytelling

concert, 'Honoring Our Ancestors.' ASE will present an afternoon of African-rooted

stories for families and story lovers that are sure to educate, entertain

and inspire. Featured will be eight of Chicagoland's most accomplished

storytellers.

The dynamic event will be presented on

Saturday, October 28 at Malcolm X College, 1900 West Van Buren (I-290 and

Damen Avenue), Chicago at 2 p.m. In addition a mask making storytelling

workshop for children and parents facilitated by Locke-Lloyd Productions

Chicago Foundation for Women

The Chicago Foundation for Women will

celebrate its 15th Anniversary at its Annual Luncheon & Symposium on

Tuesday, September 26, 2000 at the Chicago Hilton & Towers. The theme

this year is `20/20a Vision: Looking Back to the Future.' The Luncheon

program begins at 12:00 noon and will feature a keynote address by Lynn

Sherr, ABC News Correspondent for '20/20.' Tickets to the luncheon begin

Sheriff sponsors safety awareness

day

The Cook County Sheriff's Office will

host the 'Sheriff's Safety Awareness Day,' Saturday, October 14, at Ford

City Shopping Center, Sheriff Michael F. Sheahan announced. Representatives

from every division of the Sheriff's Office will be present to provide

information on the various services offered by the department. The event

will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 3 p.m.

offers new workshop series and professional certification programs

In keeping with Support Center of Chicago's

(SCC) commitment to developing excellence in non-profit management, SCC

has created five new workshops series including two certificate programs

for the Fall 2000 term. The topics covered by the series include: Volunteer

Management, Resource Development, Communications, Board Development and

Future Planning.

The workshops begin October 2, 2000 and

will be held at various locations in metropolitan Chicago. Individual workshop

American Indian powwow to

celebrate City of Chicago's roots

The Midway Plaisance will explode this

fall with the vivid colors, sounds and rhythms of an American Indian powwow.

Hosted by the University of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, the

Eschikagou Powwow and Indian Traders' Rendezvous will include hundreds

of Indian dancers, drummers, storytellers and crafters from across the

nation. The event is expected to draw the largest gathering of American

Indians in Chicago in 39 years.

Open Hand Chicago Needs Volunteers

for South Side Grocery Center Operations

Open Hand Chicago is the city's leading

not-for-profit providing food and nutritional services free of charge to

low-income men, women and children significantly affected by HIV/AIDS.

Founded in 1988, Open Hand currently serves over 550,000 meals annual to

1,500 clients and recently served its 3 millionth meal. Clients who are

homebound receive home delivered lunches and dinners; while those who can

pick up and prepare their own meals receive groceries at weekly visits

to one of four neighborhood-based grocery centers.

compassion to those desperately in need of nutritious meals can call Open

Unity Month

The Chicago Public Library and the Commission

on Human Relations' Advisory Council on Women celebrate Unity month with

the presentation of a special program entitled, A Question of Beauty: Women's

'Qannik' wins in Shedd's

public vote for baby calf's name

One day before the newest male beluga

calf turns two months old, Shedd Aquarium officials announced that 'Qannik'

(kah-NICK) is what the baby beluga will be called. 'Qannik,' an Inuit name

that means 'snowflake,' was one of five choices the Shedd provided when

it called for a vote. Mother Mauyak's name means 'soft snow.'

More than 13,000 votes were cast in the

naming. Ballots were distributed at the Shedd and made available on Shedd

Aquarium's website. Votes came from many parts of the world as well as

other regions of the United States. 'Qannik' was the overwhelming choice

in the balloting, with 31 percent of the vote.

White announces public hearing

to discuss areas without public library service

Secretary of State and State Librarian

Jesse White today announced that a public hearing will be held on Monday,

Oct. 2, regarding Illinois residents who do not have a public library service.

The hearing will be held in the atrium of the Illinois State Library, 300

S. Second St. in Springfield, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

People are encouraged to submit testimony

by mail by October 2 to Jean Wilkins, Direct or, Illinois State Library,

300 S. Second St., Springfield, IL 62701.
