Six visiting artists from throughout the

state will create giant snow sculptures on the south side of Chicago at

Olive Harvey College campus next week. Previews of the work in progress

will take place on Saturday, January 6, 2001 at 2 p.m. The official opening

of the completed exhibit will be Sunday, January 7 at 2 p.m. Snow sculpture

viewing hours will be 11:00 a.m. -- 7 p.m., through January 21 (weather

permitting). Olive-Harvey College is located at 10001 S. Weldon Avenue,

just off the Bishop Ford Expressway 103rd Street exits.

'This interactive exhibit brings winter

fun to the neighborhood,' said Dr. Lawrence Cox, President of Olive-Harvey

College. 'As a community college, Olive-Harvey appreciates its neighbors

with services and programs that enhance the quality of life as well as

Chicago's economy, through workforce training opportunities. Spring registration

is currently underway with free sitter service available. We invite the

entire community to come out and bring the kids,' said Cox.

There will be eight-foot tall snow sculptures

of the most popular cartoon characters. Families can drive over and take

pictures or park the car, see the remarkable statues up close and come

inside for warm treats.

Children can add their own creative touch

to smaller unfinished statues or play a cartoon trivia game throughout

the exhibit.

Area art students will be extended special

invitations for viewing and demonstration of this arm form that is centuries

old. Local daycare families and senior citizen groups will also be invited

Olive Harvey College is one of the largest

community college districts in Illinois serving 165,000 citizens in the

Chicago area.
