Calumet Park, IL -- Calumet Park

Elementary School District support staff workers will be

walking an informational picket line Wednesday, prior to

the first federally mediated bargaining session with

District 132 representatives.

The members of the Calumet

Park Educational Support Staff Association (CESSA) have

spent more than a year attempting to bargain a contract

with District 132. Actions the district has taken against

union members have hampered contract talks.

"Since we voted to

unionize last year, the district has illegally fired 12

of our members," said CESSA president Bertha

Olawumi.

"We are picketing to

remind the public of the district's obligations. District

132 needs to start following the law, the CESSA members

who were illegally fired need to be reinstated and the

district needs to offer CESSA a fair contract.

The informational

picketing will take place Wednesday, August 16, from 5

until 6 PM. Later that evening, a federal mediator will

meet with representatives of CESSA and the school

district.

"This is the first

time we'll be meeting the district with a federal

mediator present. We hope this will cause the district

to, finally, get serious about offering our members the

fair contract they deserve.

Picketing will take place

at the Board Offices outside Calumet School, located at

1440 W. Vermont, Calumet Park, IL; Directions: Take I-57

to 127th St. (Exit 353). Go east (left) one block to

Ashland. Go south (right) on Ashland two blocks to

Vermont. Go east (left) on Vermont two blocks to Calumet

School.
