Springfield, Illinois - Illinois State

Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka holds up "Balancing America's Budget," one

of many books her office collected in a book drive, which kicked off Topinka's

efforts to promote literacy across Illinois.

Joining Topinka at the press conference

were Sarah Watson, Senior Advisor to Gov. George Ryan for Literacy and

Mr. Jim Jackson, Assistant Superintendent from Springfield School District

186, which received the books from the Treasurer's office.

In addition to the office book drive, Topinka

also announced that her office is teaming up with Ryan's recently announced

Illinois Reads program to promote future book drives across the state.

Illinois Reads will provide a framework for all reading and literacy-related

initiatives in Illinois, creating a unified effort.

Anyone interested in donating books to

school libraries can call their local school district or the State Treasurer's

Office toll free at 866-ILTREASURER. In addition, to learn more about the

Illinois Reads program, call 217-782-0316.
