Thornton Township recently held its 150th

Anniversary at the Township Hall located at 333 W. 162nd Street. Thornton

Township is the oldest and closest form of government in existence. Getting

into the act was Governor Ryan who declared April 'township government

month'. The towns included within the boundaries are Burnham, Calumet City,

Dixmoor, Dolton, East Hazel Crest, Phoenix, South Holland and Thornton.

The township also includes portions of Riverdale, Posen, Markham, Lansing,

Homewood, Hazel Crest, Harvey and Glenwood.

Thornton Township has hosted a variety

of events throughout the year which illustrates how close these programs

affect the citizens at the grass roots level. With 10 departments which

include assistance for persons experiencing difficulties to those needing

general assistance. It has luncheon and transportation services for seniors;

home modification mini grants for persons with disabilities to improve

accessibility to their homes, health screenings and education; youth and

family counseling, youth alternatives programs and annual Job Fairs for

youth and adults.

Township Supverisor, Frank M. Zuccarelli

said the motto of the township is 'People Working With People' and emphasized

its accessibility and commitment which is reflected in the many programs

it offers.'
